I've known your aunt for many years and have had long conversations with her. She was a member of Dave's Garden before I was, and a prolific writer and shared so much of her life experiences. I could count on her to write intelligently and we used to tease each other over typos and proper grammar. I will miss her dry wit and depth of knowlege. If anyone hasn't told you, she thought your little guy was just the cutest kid ever, and shared his pictures with us. We had to agree. I'm so sorry for your loss. Do you know if any arrangements were made for Shug, her kitty? Knowing good sick room protocol, a stash of antibiotics (before penicillin many people died from fairly straight-forward wound infections...cut your finger badly=uh-oh!), antiseptics & disinfectants.

I've got N95 masks. Research has shown masks don't seem to prevent disease thru preventing the inhalation of viruses, bacteria, but rather thru blocking the exhalation of such, so most effective if the sick person wears them.

As I understand it, the Black Death may not have been bubonic plague, but a variant of Ebola.

Currently, there is a CDC warning issued for the virus chikungunya, endemic to Africa but has recently shown up in the West Indies & the concern is students on Spring Break may bring it into the mainland. It is spread by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. The chikungunya virus causes fever, headaches, nausea, rashes, intense muscle & joint pain for weeks & sometimes years.

There is also a variant of the fungus Cryptococcus gattii that has spread to the Pacific NW that is now infecting people. Fungal diseases are extremely difficult to treat & the treatment often has very harsh side-effects, as fungi share about 98% of our genome, so whatever affects them will affect us as well. It is speculated the spread of this disease is facilitated by global climate change, as is the spread of malaria into new areas.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/04/100421-new-fungus-cryptococcus-gattii-deadly-health-science/DonkeyBusterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03663621929565084473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-603055518123606194.post-45577006563089622332014-03-10T07:18:42.350-04:002014-03-10T07:18:42.350-04:00How odd! Bulldozer drivers have a computer that tells them when the ground is level. No one builds the fancy facades to buildings. They are all pre-formed structures. And it goes on.

No one much seems to think about what will happen if the power goes out. Think doctors' offices and your records are on that computer.... Not all of mine, I get hard copy as often as I can. (Been thro the missing med record thing before...)

Here, we build and create almost everything. (Being a 4th generation packrat comes in handy here.) We salvage and reuse things. But this means we have to know how to wire things, plumb w/o leaks, and construct so it will take wear and tear. These we learned by doing, or by working with someone who knew how.

I homeschooled my son. He does know how to do math, computers, etc were banned. He can cook from scratch. He can sew and repair clothing. Basic living skills.

I sometimes wonder what would happen.... but not too often or too deeply.
